Services

Psychological assessments are designed to assist in highlighting cognitive and emotional strengths and weaknesses, diagnosing mental health problems, and providing treatment and placement recommendations. Dr. Abramowitz utilizes current and well-validated psychological measures to assess issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety issues, post-traumatic stress and acute stress disorder, drug and alcohol disorders, schizophrenia and psychotic illnesses, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and personality issues. Following psychological testing, Dr. Abramowitz will summarize results into a written report and will conduct a feedback session with the individual.

Clinical neuropsychology is a subspecialty that focuses on brain function by using standardized tests to obtain objective information regarding an individual’s cognitive functioning. A neuropsychological evaluation includes an assessment of the magnitude of strength or weakness across various areas of cognitive functioning, including:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Learning and memory
  • Speech and language
  • Visuospatial and perceptual abilities
  • Sensory and motor functioning
  • Decision-making, planning, and problem-solving

This information will be summarized into a written report and a feedback session with the individual is usually conducted in order to review the results. Where possible, Dr. Abramowitz will provide an opinion on the cause and prognosis of the condition, as well as treatment recommendations. Sometimes an assessment is performed to establish a “baseline” of the person’s thinking skills before there is a problem. This baseline will help track changes in neurocognitive functioning. In addition, repeated neuropsychological evaluations can be performed in order to determine improvement or deterioration of over time.

Navigating the intersection of mental health and the legal system requires a very specialized set of clinical and assessment skills.  Dr. Abramowitz offers forensic psychology services as part of a range of legal proceedings. Her goal as an expert witness is to present accurate and precise information to the decision makers in the courtroom regarding psychologically-based questions. Dr. Abramowitz is available to conduct forensic evaluations as part of the following legal matters:

  • Fitness to stand trial
  • Criminal responsibility
  • Pre-sentencing evaluations
  • Independent medical examinations
  • Fitness for work and work-related risk assessments
  • Violence and sexual violence risk assessments
  • Dangerous / long-term offender applications

Dr. Abramowitz has been qualified as an expert witness in clinical, forensic, and neuropsychology and has testified in provincial and superior-level courtrooms, as well as at the Ontario Review Board.

FAQs

How long will my assessment take?

Assessments are comprehensive evaluations that usually require one to two days of face-to-face time. An interview will be conducted to get to know you better and understand your background. Following the interview process, you will get started with testing. In some cases, the assessment will be broken up into small chunks and completed over the course of several days, in order to accommodate an individual’s comfort and stamina level.

Do I get to take breaks?

Yes. Testing can be mentally and physically tiring, so breaks can be requested at any time. You will be provided with a lunch break.

Can I stop if I don’t like it?

Yes. You may discontinue the assessment at any time, even once it has started.

Do I need to bring anything to the appointment?

Yes. Please bring any hearing aids or reading glasses that you may use. Feel free to dress comfortably and casually. You are also welcome to bring anything that might help you during the day. For example, if you use a back rest or pillow to sit more comfortably, you might want to bring that along. We encourage you to take your regular regimen of medications on the days of the assessment. Please do not consume any recreational drugs or alcohol prior to or during the assessment. Feel free to bring snacks and/or lunch with you. There are also several fast food establishments and restaurants nearby where you can purchase food and/or beverages.

Is there anything I can do to prepare?

No. These assessments aren’t like school tests. You can’t study for them and, unlike school tests, these measures are not graded pass or fail. In general, your performance is compared to others with a similar background such as age, gender and educational experience. Your best preparation is to get a good nights’ sleep. It is also a good idea to have something to eat prior to the appointment. If you’re not a breakfast person, feel free to bring snacks with you.

Is there parking nearby?

Yes. There is a Green P parking lot across from in the building. However, this parking lot is quite expensive (i.e., there is no daily maximum). There are several other municipal parking lots very nearby which charge a more reasonable rate:

  1. Lomond (8 Lomond Drive)
  2. Main Commuter Lot (3472 Bloor Street West)
  3. Fieldway (22 Fieldway Road)

You may also be able to locate street parking nearby.
